Video | Piedmont Prairies: An Alternative to Grass and Lawns Where Beauty and Life Thrive!

Watch to learn more about the benefits and beauty that Piedmont Prairies provide.

Hi, I’m Basil! And behind me is one of my favorite things in the world. It’s called a Piedmont Prairie. It is bursting with life, and as you can see, it is incredibly beautiful. This is a new service that we will be begin offering in 2023.

In a nutshell, a Piedmont Prairie is a community of native grasses and flowers. So this particular Piedmont Prairie is very special to me. This is the first one I ever planted. And since then, I have had so much time to sit out here on warm days and look at the flowers, look at the grass. Watch the pollinators interacting; I see bees buzzing around; I see grass hoppers jumping, I see all kinds of insects that I can’t even identify. It’s teaming with life and teaming with beauty. And every time I get to sit and enjoy this, my day gets a little bit better.

All of this started almost a decade ago, when I was tired of mowing grass so I planted a garden. I loved my garden. It was beautiful, but it too required a lot of weekly and monthly maintenance. I had to pull weeds.

That set me on this path of trying to understand how I could do gardening in a way that doesn’t require mowing and weeding. That doesn’t require the standard practices. Because after all, You can go out in nature and you can find places where flowers are growing, and they aren’t being tended to. So this led me to research, to practice, to chatting with other folks who knew more about flowers and grasses than I did. And a lot of experimentation. And where we have landed, or rather where I have landed, is this Piedmont Prairie.

I have enjoyed it so much that we have expanded our research, we’ve got lots of other test plots that we have been working on for a number of years now. And we want to share it with you! It’s just too beautiful, too incredible, too important to be something that just sits in my back yard, or in our test plots. This is something that we would like the bring to you.

We want you to have this. It’s amazing, it has changed my life. I know it is going to change your life as well. We are doing a very limited run for 2023. We are going to cap the number of new projects we take so we can continue dialing this in, making sure it’s right. We will offer special incentives just for the first year since this is our pioneer run. And we would love for you to be part of that pioneer run. So if you’re interested shoot us an email and let us know, and we will add you to the list of people who want to have this beauty in their yard.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Piedmont Prairie?

A Piedmont Prairie is a low-maintenance landscape made up of native grasses and flowers. It supports biodiversity, reduces the need for mowing or chemicals, and is filled with life like bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

How is a Piedmont Prairie different from a traditional lawn?

Unlike traditional grass lawns that require frequent mowing and chemical inputs, Piedmont Prairies are self-sustaining, require minimal maintenance, and create habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Why should I consider planting a Piedmont Prairie?

Piedmont Prairies are beautiful, environmentally friendly, and easier to care for over time. They help restore ecosystems, reduce runoff, support pollinators, and bring joy through seasonal blooms and rich biodiversity.

Is it hard to maintain a Piedmont Prairie?

Not at all. After the initial planting and establishment period, Piedmont Prairies typically require only one mowing per year and no fertilizers, herbicides, or irrigation—making them much easier to maintain than traditional gardens or lawns.
