Project Pando: Native Seed Hub

Help Project Pando collect native tree and shrub seeds!

Native seed collection for Project Pando community nursery.

Join our Triangle wide native seed hub. We collect thousands of native tree and shrub seeds each year. These seeds are vital for native restoration projects in our area and beyond. We need your help!

Acorns and native seeds for Project Pando

The seeds that you collect will be planted by our volunteers. These seeds will eventually grow into saplings that we give away to assist important restoration efforts.

It’s easy to get involved! Be sure to keep your eyes open while you walk your dog, take a hike through the forest, or play at the park! We collect almost all species of native tree and shrub seeds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Project Pando’s community seed collection program?

It’s a volunteer-led effort to collect native tree and shrub seeds that are used to grow saplings at Leaf & Limb’s Project Pando nursery. These trees are later given away to support local reforestation and restoration efforts.

How do I know which seeds are ready to collect?

Use Project Pando’s seed ripening calendar to find out which native seeds are in season. The best time to collect is typically from late summer through November.

Where can I drop off collected seeds?

Seeds can be dropped off at any of the designated drop-off locations around the Triangle. A map and list of locations is available on the Project Pando website.

Do I need special tools or training to collect seeds?

No special tools are required. Just use your hands, a bag, and the provided ID guides to help you recognize mature, native seeds. Follow our instructions for proper storage and drop-off.

Why is it important to collect native seeds in central North Carolina?

Locally collected seeds are better adapted to our region’s climate and soil. Growing trees from local seed sources helps ensure healthier, more resilient native forests across central North Carolina.
